RIP Phil Hughes

Michael Clarke has risen hugely in my estimation in the last week.

A good man...

Me too Esk. I bet he regrets the arm breaking comments of last summer, he seems a genuine bloke who gets carried away on the big stage with an audience. He's been magnificent the last 7 days.

Indeed, and I hope this is appreciated when the Aussies come to town next summer, no need for recent tensions to re-surface.

I don't think they will you know, I think this has shaken the entire cricketing world. I like to hope that sportsmanship will come back into play in the name of Phil Hughes, and even an ICC trophy awarded for fair play.

Spoke to a friend in Melbourne this morning, he said he's carried the Nation.

Not usual for a Pom to say this, but I do love the Aussie attitude to cricket.

Yeah he has, we've felt it on our shores too, he's going to be Australian of the year no doubt, his speech had me choking back tears yesterday watching it. Never left the ward from the moment he arrived last week till the moment Phil passed, held his hand the whole time. Awful :(

In the day's play just gone between Australia and India in the 1st Test, there was an incident where Kohli was hit on the head by a bouncer from Mitchell Johnson. Hit flush on the helmet and every Aussie player nearby was straight there to make sure he was ok, including Johnson who looked visibly shaken by it all.
The technique that Kohli employed in dealing with the bouncer was dreadful though, taking his eye of the ball, not moving his head out the way, knowing that the helmet was there for him if he got hit. Kohli is just about India's best batsman and he went on to hit a hundred but this is another example of how a batsman has substituted wearing a helmet for learning a proper technique.

Australia was brought to a near standstill. I don't think us Brits always appreciate just how important sport is to the Aussies, it really is central to who they are.

i do, believe me ha. i never see a sport where the aussies aren't giving 100%. they're like that kid in school that would be decent first time round of trying any sport. they just seem to love any sport.

well done to the aussies on their win in the first test - tremendous spirit.

saw phil hughes' brother scored 63 on his first innings back in cricket and abbott taking a career best 6-14 on his first match back. tremendous fighting spirit from all

Fitting Test match really.

Australia are my favourite second cricket team. I witnessed all the humiliations in the Ashes, lost hours of sleep staying up hoping we could do something over there but always ended up getting battered. But I always want them to beat everyone else so when we play them it means even more. They are great to watch and the way they've bounced back after losing so many world class players have been tremendous. Hope Clarke shakes off his latest injury.

On another note, our one day side is beyond a joke now. How many one day series do we have to lose before Cook is given the chop? I can't remember any other captain surviving such embarrassing results. It's not that we're losing games, it's the fact that we're not even putting up a fight in most of them. It's like watching Bangladesh. Old boys club strikes again.

Cook is not a one-day player, never has been, but he was included in the 50 over squads a few years to give him captaincy experience ahead of taking over from Strauss in the Test team. Now that he is Test captain, there is little logic now in still having him in the 50 over team. Carberry would have been a better bet over the past couple of years as he can bat at various speeds, from careful defence to outright slaughter.
