- 149 combat missions during WW2 (in the Pacific) and Korea
- three years as a test pilot
- broke the record for the (then) fastest crossing of the US
- two space flights, the last of which was at the age of 77
- the last surviving member of the original Mercury Seven
- twenty-four years as a member of the US Senate
- lost to Walter Mondale in the 1984 Democratic Primaries, which before 2016 was perhaps the last great "what on earth were they thinking" moment in US politics
