Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association in relation to comments posted on Twitter.

Ferdinand denied he was being racist after responding to a tweet describing Chelsea's Ashley Cole as a "choc ice".

The term used relates to the black and white nature of the confectionery, when an individual is supposedly being black on the outside and white on the inside.

Ferdinand has until 16:00 BST on 2 August to respond to the charge.

The problem is that given the 'hardline against racism' the FA are seeking to adopt they simply can't ignore a remark that if Terry had used would certainly have seen him charged . Whatever our own perception of the phrase it has or can been seen to have 'racial connotations' so i can't see the FA having any kind of choice really

But its not as if he made the comment, I mean clearly by "retweeting" it and commenting it would appear as tho he validated it, but still.

Didn't he retweet with something like "choc ice , class lol" or whatever , which seems to give the comment some credence, switch choc ice for another racial comment and he'd get the same. I don't disagree that it's a crazy situation but once the FA have set themselves up for 'zero tolerance' right or wrong its inevitable.
