He's one of my heroes - I met him once, when he was training for the mad round-the globe balloon race thing he did with per Lyndstrom many years back. He was up at Cark airfiled in the Lakes, and my mates dad was training them both in accelerated freefall.
He's a bit of an airhead, and one-time they were in descent (AFF is where you have an instructor either side of you). They had only just exited the plane at 12000 ft when my mates dad says check your altimeter, now touch your chute release - now touch your reserve release....He then panics, and pulls his reserve chute at an altitude of just below 11000 ft.
A/ this is a mad thing to do as the reserve jettisons your main chute before deploying - so effectively you lose your main source of survival, and instead are now only on your backup.
B/ deploying a chute at 11000 ft is also a bad thing todo as he actually landed about 20 miles away from the DZ
But he had a good laugh at himself afterwards, and got the ale in all night at the local boozer - he's great, he has a real pioneering spirit about him, and is well and truly a nice guy.
