The old saying is that you get the politicians you deserve. If they vote in creeps like this, there endeth the lesson.

OMG talk about taking something out of context.

So are we saying that next time one of the English Civil war re-enactment groups dresses in a Roundhead costume they should be tried for treason for wanting to kill the Monach?

Or how about someone dressing up as a Viking raider. Are you going to sue them for crimes against the native British community??????

GET A GRIP.

He's taken part in historical re-enactments not organised death camps. FFS

"Mr Iott also posted several photographs which showed him dressed in a US World War I uniform and also in a Union uniform during a Civil War re-enactment."

Says it all.

That the media's only mentioned one sentence with that KEY information too.

US media is a joke.

He likes dressing up in SS regalia. Not a pastime that would win him many friends on Capitol Hill I wouldn't imagine.

He's finished. Move on.

Maybe they could play together

This guy is clearly a sympathizer, sorry. Can you imagine if a democrat dressed up in a Red Army uniform and re-enacted battles? The right wing press in this country would literally lose it's mind. Read the article. I think this part is telling...

Iott, a member of the Ohio Military Reserve, added, "I've always been fascinated by the fact that here was a relatively small country that from a strictly military point of view accomplished incredible things. I mean, they took over most of Europe and Russia, and it really took the combined effort of the free world to defeat them. From a purely historical military point of view, that's incredible."

"Iott says the group chose the Wiking division in part because it fought on the Eastern Front, mainly against the Russian Army, and not U.S. or British soldiers. The group's website includes a lengthy history of the Wiking unit, a recruitment video, and footage of goose-stepping German soldiers marching in the Warsaw victory parade after Poland fell in 1939. The website makes scant mention of the atrocities committed by the Waffen SS, and includes only a glancing reference to the "twisted" nature of Nazism. Instead, it emphasizes how the Wiking unit fought Bolshevist Communism..."

At worst, he's a sympathizer. At best, he's a freakin' idiot.

Wherever the truth lies...at either end or any point along the spectrum.... he wouldn't get my vote.

Considering that Republicans have held that seat for a grand total of 2 years since 1947 (a guy named Ed Weber rode Reagan's coattails in 1981 and then promptly got voted out two years later), this guy had an uphill battle in that district anyway.

What this group is truly guilty of is getting history completely wrong and sanitizing it and romanticizing it. I mean, this IS the same Nazi army our fathers and grandfathers fought and died to defeat.

He's right though from an military academic perspective the Wehrmacht did do something quite incredible when they started the blitzkreig through the low countries and attacked the allies in the flank.

Forcing the British to withdraw via Dunkirk and occupying France. They also did something quite incredibly-idiotic attacking the Russians also.

This historical-recreation attack is being done for political purposes, something of a witch hunt as bad as the Mcarthy era. I like the Democrat party but to be making these attacks about this guy is frankly embarrassing.

If he dressed up to take part in a recreation of the Slave trade, with slaves rather than face up to history (Which most Democrats would say is a good thing) the political attacks would be that he's endorsing it!!!????

The logic of this political attack would say yes. The stupidity is that basically you can't address history any more and have to live in a constant state of denial!

It's ******* stupid politics this.

"Those that do not learn from the mistakes of history, are doomed to repeat it"

Its superficial politics and it's a disgrace really.

Yes they did.

But the Nazi's were guilty of a lack of EMPATHY.

They didn't feel any sort of understanding of the peoples they invaded.

The Allies on the otherhand and the people who fought them did empathise with those who were under the thrall of Hitler - the Dictator.

Romanticising it?

I don't think. They're allowing people to understand the horrors of WWII.

Abit like those in England who recreate the English Civil war and who allow Children to see some of their ancestors history in the flesh.

And people are deliberately trying to say that anyone who recreates historical battles basically sides with the politics of the side they are "ACTING" in. WHICH IS NONSENSE! It's political correctness gone mad.

And it shows if anything - how SHALLOW politics is in the USA.

Yes romanticizing it. They specifically chose an SS division. Why? Why not choose a Wehrmacht unit? From their website:

"...Regardless, thousands upon thousands of valiant men died defending their respective countries in the name of a better tomorrow. We salute these idealists; no matter how unsavory the Nazi government was, the front-line soldiers of the Waffen-SS (in particular the foreign volunteers) gave their lives for their loved ones and a basic desire to be free".

WE SALUTE THESE IDEALISTS? Are you kidding me? The Waffen-SS gave their lives for "
...a basic desire to be free"? Who are these weapons kidding? They gave their lives to subjugate an entire continent and commit genocide!

THESE ARE THEIR WORDS NOT MINE. It's not PC to raise an eye at a group of re-enactors who deliberately choose the Waffen-SS as their emulation, and then put up a website praising their exploits.

Because the Wehrmacht was made up of many regiments. What do you want them to do pretend that the SS didn't exist?

And the reason why many look at the SS is because they had some of the more interesting and unique uniforms in the Wehrmacht.

Nothing more or less.

I agree the phrasing of "saluting" the SS was unfortunate. However, are you saying this candidate actually wrote that page on the website?

Or are you saying now that Barack Obama is now responsible for every single publication published in government - which he obviously isn't!

And yes Johnny. Many of the CONSCRIPTS in the Wehrmacht were forced into the German military machine.

The SS members were totally idiotic brain washed and racist (due to a complete lack of empathy for their fellow man). But you can't deny that thats what they fought for (even as the aggressors) because the Versailles Treaty made them believe they were OPPRESSED and Hitler played into that on a national level!

But then applying this to this Republican candidates belief system and IMPLYING he's a. Racist. b. totally empathic/sympathetic and c. basically that he's a Nazi

is completely wrong, and it's almost Nazi-like in it's political attack on him. (and I'm saying that who would typically find not a problem supporting either a Democrat or Republican party member!)

That was the difference between the Allies and the Axis powers.

But hell. If people like that candidate didn't recreate this sort of stuff - no one would remember any of this.

But they want to burn him over there. It really is disgusting behaviour.
