so I finally got sorted but here's a question.

I need to make recovery discs, if I load microsoft office first will it include that, and thus not delete the files if I have to use the disc ?

reason is, on my arl one I had loaded office myself, then when I had to use the rec discs I lost everything related to office, as trhe file extensions weren't for the software on the disc it deleted them, which meant i lost a hell of a lot of stuff including every email address from outlook. People say they are in there somewhere but I can confirm that they weren't.

Not very,worth a try though.

Data Connector behind the screen: 40 pin flat

I have got new gadget insurance actually, accidental damage is included. They would just replace the screen for me I think, if there's a £50 excess (not sure) then it would cost me the same but be fitted for me.

Arses though.

Youngests Birthday next week.
Eldests 1 month later
xmas
middle ones birthday in Jan.

extra expense is not required at this moment. Hopefully no excess.

Also, with memory cards costing the equivalent of what a 36 exposure film and developing used to cost, I never delete any now, I still copy them but just keep the memory cards as extra back up, and they hold the equivalent of hundreds of rolls of film each.

Why didn't you remove the hard drive and put it in a caddy ? I was told that you can recover the docs by doing that, and also then use it as a seperate hard drive.

My teccy mate had a look at it, told him what was on there and not to wipe anything. He gave it back to me and said he couldnt fix it. Eventually I put the hard drive into a different laptop, everything was gone!

sounds like he may have formatted it.
