Religion and Superstition

Religion is definitely lost at Christmas but the joy and togetherness it brings to people is for me as good as religion. For that very reason I love Christmas Day Mass, everyone in great form, get to see old friends and just enjoy the positive vibes around me.

I get that, it’s a glimpse into what we are capable of, but it begs the question why can’t we approach every day like that, why do we need some ridiculous myth to allow ourselves to feel goodwill to each other, why don’t we celebrate something real and worthy of awe, worthy of humility, like the global eradication of smallpox in December 1979 (An estimated 300 million people died from smallpox in the 20th century alone. This virulent disease, which kills a third of those it infects, is known to have co-existed with human beings for thousands of years.)

Does anyone know if creationists believe humanity sinned or displeased god in eradicating one his wonderful infectious virus creations? (there are approximately 320,000 viruses that are known to infect mammals [I am currently a host to one of said, the rhinovirus and I feel terrible], and overall there are millions of types, they are the most numerous type of biological entity on the earth, that is some serious benevolent creator if you are a virus, not so much if you are a host to one).

Disease and viruses are a nightmare for Creationists beliefs you’d think.

Not only must they accept that all life, even the most horrendous diseases are part of God’s plan, but then you have the ones that have become resistant to anti-biotics (a potential future crisis) which is strong evidence supporting Darwin’s theory of evolution.

He works in mysterious ways I guess... :hayee:

When I was in the raf I asked for Jedi on my dog tags as that was what I put on the census. More for a reaction than anything, I've always been more of a Trekkie.

Invariably since then I've put down on forms that I'm Christian despite having no belief in a Christian God.

I've looked at different belief systems, i was interested in Spiritualism but although I believe in spirits I have little faith in the people who claim to contact them.

The religion I feel closest to is Buddhism. It reflects my view of the world in a lot of ways and it's philosophy is in line with how I try to be a better man.

I wouldn't call myself a Buddhist because I don't fall in line with the 4th and 5th precepts especially but a lot of its tenets I aspire to.
