I'm not really sure i should even be writing this,Firstly i dont have any vast knowledge of anything( my fields was in sports coaching/sports development), i'm not a "religious" buff, i've read maybe a chapter of the bible, a page or two from Buddhism, and the only time i've seen a Quran (the Islamic book) is in a movie.

Secondly, My English is terrible, writing, grammar and spelling.

but, i just thought this (what I'm about to say) should be known more, by more people as it has helped understand and changed my way of thinking.
Maybe some of you will just think its nonsense or nonessential, and that's fine I'm not forcing this way of thinking on anybody.

That said...

A major part of being depressed or unhappy (and anxious) is through the way we think, or thought, as the case may be. Now you're asking yourself, 'what the difference between thought and thinking?'you are because you just read it and that's good, now you're thinking.

The difference between the two is, one is volunteer, and one is not.
'well, how can one be volunteer and one not, if they are in the same head?'
lets look at the question, "how can one be volunteer and one not?" and here we find the answer. There are two entities inside your mind the "thinker" and the "thought-er". The thinker, is the part we use for present moment things, where we need our attention, the inspiration and motivator amongst other things.

The thoughts are the problem area, we drift around in a haze of our own thoughts, and most of the time they are very negative, going from one worrying moment to worrying moment. Many of us don't even realize this happens, we think about past wrongs that has happened to us, or the future, whats going to happen to me. why do we put ourselves through this day in day out, its as if we enjoy being unhappy, do you enjoy being unhappy, depressed?
however there is nothing i can do or say to you that will help you stop this, you can read all the religious, philosophy, psychology and self help books in the world and they won't help, they're like using a road map, the map wont get u there you physical have to go, Its the same with the books, they are just road signs, there are no 7 steps to happiness, its only through the realization of the two entities that we come to see that we can of control what we think. You'll start to catch you're self drifting into negative thinking or thought-ing.
But how can you change your thinking? once you realize you are drifting, think of something that is'nt unpleasant, for me its food shopping (sometimes), although this isn't everybody's idea of a good time, it helps to understand about living in the present moment which is another part to dissolving the "thought".

you also have to understand that being unhappy is not the same as being sad. being sad is a normal emotion, its the other end of the emotional scale, and its ok to be sad (it can even be inspirational), as long as you're not unhappy. unhappiness ,this includes physical world too, leads to depression which is not normal emotional stats, after all who would want to be depressed most of their lives? if you are unhappy there are only two options, either totally except of the situation, or change.

anyways, i hope this can be helpful, it has help me, although i catch myself slipping, its happens less and less and feel a great weight lifted. I am willing to try to help in any way i can and please ask any questions you have or leave a comment, and i would refer you to Eckhart Tolle's books and PDF's, you tube videos..

thanks for read.

Thanks for the post mate, but as Groucho said you may want to post this on the long running and soon to be " award winning "depression thread.

Ps - I,m not in anyway denigrating your post in anyway, but it would be easier to read if it was less " wordy " and easier to read.

he's not talking about being depressed lads, he's talking about the loss of one's ego and essentially becoming "enlightened", and I for one applaud him for raising such an interesting subject

but seriously though c'mon now pineapple on pizza, how about it ???

I'll take a slice mate.
There's always one.
You probably like pineapple with a pork kebab too don't you ?

Actually, that works quite well. Not totally sure what my point is here

Are you saying @peteblue is basically one of @Groucho s alter egos??

Mate, I'm glad to hear what works for you and that's fantastic but it's not for everybody, sorry didnt mean that to sound dismissive at all but I think there is a very real distinction between clinical depression and feeling unhappy or down. I could be wrong but I believe what your practising is , in a word 'mindfulness' , this is an excellent tool in itself to help people who are prone to lapses of depression or who suffer personality disorders but it's really not as easy as 'thinking yourself better' in my humble opinion.
I do though applaud you on your ongoing efforts in keeping yourself well and I don't doubt your intentions are very clearly to help people. Well played lad x

No, I think he got mixed up.

As for the OP, valid point about sadness being a normal emotion to experience.

Depression comes about either when there's a cause for a particular episode, or mostly when there is a prolonged low mood for no reason, often accompanied by the equally worse anxiety.

Feel free to use the established depression help thread.

;)
