Afternoon guys. Went in to work today and got told they are closing the site where I work in Manchester. I have 2 options take redundancy or move to wavertree where we have another office. The down side, it cost's me over £100 a month in petrol currently travelling to Manchester by car. As wavertree is twice as far my cost of travelling to work will double. Also I've not been happy in my job for a while so this could be the ideal opportunity to start a fresh. However jobs we hard to come by so I'm really am in 2 minds what to do. On the plus side if I take the job at least I should nearer to more blues.

Take the job and look for something more suitable.

Keep the money coming in.

Like Bryan said I would take the job and then look for another one.

To save on fuel is there anyway you can get the train? If you can you can just get off at Wavertree Technology Park, which would save a lot on fuel costs as the train is a lot cheaper.

Yeah this is something I may look in to. The down side to this I start work at 7 in the morning so not sure how easy the commute will be time wise. Also finish at 2 to get back for 3 to pick the lad up from school, again will be hard pushed from time point of view.

What do you do for a living? Are you staff? I believe that they are legally obliged to offer relocation fees over a certain distance, in order to cover extra travel costs in the case of a move. I'm also unsure that they can say it's one or the other, as a redundancy would imply that your job role is no longer available, but the offer to move would suggest it is. In this case they have to go through full redundancy consultations. You could actually come out of this better off, as the travel allowance will have to be at Govt. travel allowance rates of approx 45p/m depending on your vehicle.

Some on here may now better, but thats how I understand it anyway.

Also worth looking into your rights here, if the company moves your job they may have to (I think but worth looking) give you a salary uplift for the 1st year as a minimum, so that would cover your costs but obviously not the extra time.

Like everyone else says keep the job and look for another, it's usually easier to get a job if you already have one

Edit .. What JAcko said

I believe, although I need to double check this with a mate who works in this area, that if you're made redundant you are entitled to either 2 or 2.5k from the government to help you retrain. I don't think there are any restrictions on what you use the money for either

If you're not happy in your job, and there is something else you'd like to do, you could possibly do a fast track profession qualification and have a career change.
