The Red Cross is to start collecting food for families in the UK who are struggling to feed themselves.

The charity said the campaign was a first step in considering whether it should be doing more to tackle the current "food poverty challenge".

One would hope our government would be somewhat embarrassed by that. It's hard to picture a more alarming indicator of economic failure.

As long as these starving people are "hard working", they're in safe hands.:( Is this what Cameron's meant when he talked about the Big Society. Funny they don't seem to talk about that any more!

I appreciate your sentiment, but less of the swearing please.

My mother in law volunteers in a local food bank, and some if the things she says she has seen are really bad for 2013.

Rather than looking at what the government (or indeed any other person) can do, what are each of you guys doing? Groucho has the right idea because his other half helps out on a cause she personally believes in.

People queuing for tins of beans and packets of cornflakes to keep from going hungry; the profit making Royal Mail privatised and handed on a plate for virtually nothing to 'investors'.

Same old Tories. Lower than vermin.

I agree there mate good point made.

be interesting to see statistics in relation to policy change/increase in food bank usage etc

although stats can be very misleading anyway! ummmm

Sorry mate I am sure there is plenty they could do if they really wanted to?

Not really - it basically comes down to income and prices - government cannot control either of those.

What the government could do is cut taxes so people have more disposable income which as a result would ease the pressure.

Let the ****ers starve then, eh?

Wasn't necessarily what I was suggesting, but it would solve the problem.
