No, not an appeal for the best Es on the scene at the moment.

Looking to buy the bird a tablet for her birthday. Was gonna get the iPad Mini so we could FaceTime when I'm away for 6 months later in the year, but have recently heard good things about the Google Nexus 7.

She's not massively into tech stuff, so 16GB wifi will be more than enough for her e-books, surfing the tinterweb and watching the odd fillum.

Anyone got any decent recommendations? Or anyone able to confirm that Google one being the dog's doo-dars?

Einsteins or Rockstars are all the rage these days, mate.

EDIT: Didn't read the first line ffs.

Can't give you any good recommendations, but I will say I don't believe it's wise to buy an iPad Mini just for face time. I believe the Google Nexus 7 supports "Google Hangouts", which are pretty much the same thing as face time. Double check that before making any buying decisions though.

Don't leave your bird on her own for 6 months

Most of the top ones are pretty similar. Just personal preference. If you have an iphone or ipad then getting her an ipad makes the most sense for a wide variety of compatibility issues (facetime, sharing itunes content etc). If you had a Nexus (or whatever) I'd say get the same as that.

Cheers, lids.

I may well just plump for the iPad mini. Got a mate heading over to the States this weekend fir a holiday so he might be able to pick one up for me at a cheaper price over there.

Any if our US-based correspondents know the going rate at the moment?

iPad Mini is a better device, bigger screen and better build quality. You'll also be able to share your apps, which might be a consideration depending on how much you've spent on apps in the first place. You'll also have the ability to share your iTunes library, and with iTunes match (optional extra) you'll be able to get away with the smaller footprint (16 Gig) by having all of the music in the cloud).

Nexus 7 - It's cheap, but you're predominantly stuck with phone apps and not proper tablet apps. If cost is your main consideration, it's got a decent processor and it's cheap. Having said that you're far better off going for the new Asus Padphone, it will be out within the next month or so.

There's nothing wrong with the Kindle offerings either, if she's mainly into consuming content.

The larger tablets offer more screen real estate, and greater flexibility if she's going to use it for work.
