My 5-year old Dell is about to pack up, I fear. Anyone able to recommend a decent replacement? Ideally around the £300 mark, but would go to £350 if needed. Must have a minimum of 1TB hard-drive.

At least 1TB at that price point? Hrm. Good luck.

I've had good luck with Acer stuff recently. I have an Iconia W7, which is one of those hybrid laptops in a tablet form factor. Good build quality. Was $800ish USD, which is a good price for something that's more comparable to an ultrabook than a traditional laptop.

I think the Acer Aspire E1 is the one that's in your price range. Might be closer to 400 GBP though if you absolutely NEED a terabyte.

Good call that, just seen it's in those ebay results. 300 quid brand new from a business seller.

I also like Acer, this Timeline was bought 2nd hand tbh and worked well for yonks, have a netbook as well but doesn't get used much these days, that 1 cld do with a new battery really but this still lasts 8 hrs playing video & streaming.

Probs way behind newer ones but does exactly what I want it to, a 17" Hd one would be nice if was delivered to me by mistake. I even got it a nice Eastpak bag(£7) for when I go on my hols so that I can watch the 1st 2 games of season.

PCWorld is the last place you want to buy one from its overpriced and their customer service is dreadful to say the least , the knowhow department is a joke they think the answer to any problem is to format the hard drive then try and bullshit up some list of none issues they are charging you for
Ebay is the best place to buy one from you will find one twice the power and half the price of a dying retailer like PCWorld
check out the sellers feedback if its less than 98% find another

For that price point you're not going to get much in terms of quality. That's the price point where tablets and Chromebooks excel, and they excel for a reason in comparison to laptops at the same price point

Why do you need a 1tb hard drive? That's a huge hard drive for such low cost laptop. The hardware isn't going to be quick enough to do any serious video or photo editing, so if you're using it as a storage device, you'll be better off buying some external storage to meet your needs instead.

Right, cheers for the useful advice!

I'll scour eBay tonight for an Acer Aspire with an i5 processor, and will see what I can get with either 500GB or 1TB hard-drive.

I just bought an Acer Aspire 4820t on ebay for £180. It's 3/4 years old and has a few dings and scratches but works perfectly.

Only has an i3 processor and 250gb hd but I bought a 750gb hd from Amazon for £40.
