maybe it's just "G" as in "gash"
Possibly. It's pronounced with a hard G though, so not quite phonetically correct. Has anyone been called a gashbag yet? Potential there, really.

We did away with 'smog' along with the poorhouse and kids up chimneys a long time ago, (although the latter will be making a comeback soon). The smell of smog, I miss it, not that it's endearing, but it's English and there's not a chance of it building up over here.
