I was replying to Paul's excellent post in the Moyeswatch thread but realised it needed its own thread as any prolonged discussion would be deemed Off Topic so with kudos to Paul, I will take the debate here.
Good post, Paul.
Worthy of a thread in its own right.
Here are my rankings.
1. Catterick
2. Howard
3. Royle
4. Lee
5. Moyes
6. Bingham.
7. Harvey
8. Smith
9. Walker
I put Harry top above Howard based on the fact that he created one great team, dismantled it and put together an arguably better one.
Gordon in fourth place behind Joe but only because Joe won a trophy.
I think Gordon was for too long underrated by our fanbase and had the team playing scintillating stuff in the late 70s.
Joe's achievements in the three quarters of a season in 1994/95 were nothing short of miraculous......from looking like relegation certainties in November to running round Wembley with the Cup in May.
Who knows what Joe might have achieved if Johnson had backed him over Flo.
Moyes and Bingham were sound enough managers but both should have achieved more.
Both were way too cautious and bottled it when the heat was on.
The title was ours for the taking in 1975 with three games to go but instead of Billy charging to the sound of the cannon he circled the wagons and let others attack our position.
Moyes should have had us in the CL at least twice, in 2008 and in 2013.... but he allowed other matters to distract him when we were in prime position to take the fourth spot.
Prolonged contract negotiations just at the time the club needed single minded dedication to the cause.
Moyes looking after No. 1 as per.
Our own Bob Geldorf.
(one for the teenagers.....they won't know owt about St. Bob before his Live Aid era)
It breaks my heart to rate Colin so lowly but his appointment was probably ill advised in retrospect, though I thoroughly agreed with it at the time and don't fault Carter for making it.
Since I have been watching Everton we have had 9 full time managers in my opinion I would rate them as follows:
1 Kendall
2 Catterick
3 Royle
4 Bingham
5 Lee
6 Moyes
7 Harvey
8 Smith
People may disagree with that order and I know managers all have worked under different circumstances but thats the way I see ,I would not ever want to see Moyes back to me he is mid table manager who lacks a winners mentality.Martinez can only be judged when he has gone.
