I was replying to Paul's excellent post in the Moyeswatch thread but realised it needed its own thread as any prolonged discussion would be deemed Off Topic so with kudos to Paul, I will take the debate here.

Since I have been watching Everton we have had 9 full time managers in my opinion I would rate them as follows:
1 Kendall
2 Catterick
3 Royle
4 Bingham
5 Lee
6 Moyes
7 Harvey
8 Smith
People may disagree with that order and I know managers all have worked under different circumstances but thats the way I see ,I would not ever want to see Moyes back to me he is mid table manager who lacks a winners mentality.Martinez can only be judged when he has gone.

Good post, Paul.

Worthy of a thread in its own right.

Here are my rankings.

1. Catterick

2. Howard

3. Royle

4. Lee

5. Moyes

6. Bingham.

7. Harvey

8. Smith

9. Walker

I put Harry top above Howard based on the fact that he created one great team, dismantled it and put together an arguably better one.

Gordon in fourth place behind Joe but only because Joe won a trophy.

I think Gordon was for too long underrated by our fanbase and had the team playing scintillating stuff in the late 70s.

Joe's achievements in the three quarters of a season in 1994/95 were nothing short of miraculous......from looking like relegation certainties in November to running round Wembley with the Cup in May.

Who knows what Joe might have achieved if Johnson had backed him over Flo.

Moyes and Bingham were sound enough managers but both should have achieved more.

Both were way too cautious and bottled it when the heat was on.

The title was ours for the taking in 1975 with three games to go but instead of Billy charging to the sound of the cannon he circled the wagons and let others attack our position.

Moyes should have had us in the CL at least twice, in 2008 and in 2013.... but he allowed other matters to distract him when we were in prime position to take the fourth spot.

Prolonged contract negotiations just at the time the club needed single minded dedication to the cause.

Moyes looking after No. 1 as per.

Our own Bob Geldorf.

(one for the teenagers.....they won't know owt about St. Bob before his Live Aid era)

It breaks my heart to rate Colin so lowly but his appointment was probably ill advised in retrospect, though I thoroughly agreed with it at the time and don't fault Carter for making it.

Mike Walker must have been real poor to be below "Disappointing" Walter. That's all I can add ;)

Note. Howard's Everton was my fist Everton from 1983. How can anyone ever compare?

Just rate them as you saw them, Kith.

the only debate about the number one spot will be between us arl arses with bus passes :)

For me:

1. Kendall
2. Royle
3. Moyes
---------------------------
4. Harvey
5. Smith
6. Walker

I have put a dividing line in as I believe the top 3 managers moved us forward as a club, the bottom 3 sadly didn't ( feel bad putting Colin there but that was the case sadly ).

Moyes dragged the club up from the canvas so deserves alot of credit for that, but he became stale and lost his belief in the club. I still believe we may have won the 09 final had we the services of Jags, Arteta and Yakubu. All playing top class football and Yak was always good for a goal in a big game. The revamp of the academy was superb too.

Royle was brilliant. Sacked far too early (reminds me a bit of how Mourinho finds himself at Chelsea currently). I always wonder how things would have turned out had we signed Martyn instead of sending him to Leeds.

Kendall was just fantastic. I hope I live to see a team of that calibre again.

Walker useless but did bring in Parkinson who was fabulous. Just never got going and spiralled out of control.

Smith left us with a joke of a squad after some good early signings. I think we went 3 months without a home goal in his 1st season (Spencer missed a pen after 6 mins in his first game v Villa) and that set the tone for his tenure. So dour too (disappointing indeed).

Have to agree with all that right there.

My older brother reckons the brand of football we played in the Catterick years was instigated by John Carey who got sacked in a taxi, HC never made many changes to that side it was just he was a gentleman - Alex young the Golden Vision Reckons if he had not been out with blistered feet, he may have saved the managers job for him even when sacked the team loved him, and the fans his last home game he was given an accolade of applause, and a speech by then Bobby Collins as we had demolished Fulham 5-1 in his farewell game - he had fetched players in like Bingham, Collins, and Young we were 5th, and he got sacked!

Kendall Mk 1 obviously number 1 but I'm 36 and sadly don't really have any memories of him in that spell.

So for my living memory it is sadly:

Moyes - never won anything but transformed the club from top to bottom. Look at the finishes before he took over and what we've done since.
Royle - loved Joe but he was only with us for 2 seasons, wish he'd stayed longer
Harvey - again loved Colin Harvey but coincided with the decline in us as a club
.........
Kendall II - they say never go back
Smith - dour but we didn't go down
Kendall III - gave youth a chance but questionable signings
Walker - out of his depth

For me:

1. Kendall

You've not seen Martinez then? lol Or too early to rate?

Lee and Bingham both should have won trophies and for all the talk of Lee being a dour no stars type of manager we played some lovely football with him in charge
I don't want to include Catterick as it was toward the end of his tenure that I really started attending the match so I will go with
1-Kendall,simply because he gave me some of my greatest memories
2-Lee so close and yet so far
3-Royle for giving us our last cup
4-Bingham-with a bit of bottle would have won the title
5-Harvey never managed to get the blend quite right
6-Smith only because he was slightly better than 7
7-walker flavour of the month manager should never have been allowed near a club of our size
