Let's just be thankful for having had them both, even if the Rat does talk some tosh at times these days.

One was well before my time so hard to judge properly not having seen his side play. Ratcliffe clearly the best captain and centre half I have seen play for us.

In fairness to Ratcliffe he managed Jags brother at Shrewsbury so that might be the proper way to say that one.

Both excellent defenders and captains. Labby was ever the gentleman, but who could forget the Rat wiping out Kogl in the ECWC semi at Goodison; he was proving a major threat, but after that one tackle that threat disintegrated. However, one was a devoted Evertonian for his whole life, and never spoke a bad word about the club and on that basis Labone narrowly shades it.

Labone, even though I never saw him play, and witnessed all of Ratcliffes glory. Labone represented the club with great pride throughout his non playing days, Ratcliffe hasn't.
