In Morrell's novel Rambo is killed at the end, all part of his commentary on how poorly Vietnam vets were treated, how disposable they were to the average American etc. Not sure if I'm remembering this correctly but think Stallone co-wrote the screenplay and wanted Rambo to survive so he could have his big soliloquy moment/do the inevitable naff sequels.Because of the glorious eighties absurdity of the sequels, it’s kind of forgotten that First Blood is a legitimately great film. The action is more grounded and visceral (ok, the ending is a bit mad) and the scenes in the woods almost take on a deliverance tone. The tension between Stallone and Brian Dennehy’s small town sheriff is fantastic and Richard Crenna as the military man who made Rambo is a scene stealer.
Predator is perfect sci fi action. Iconic villain, iconic lines (if it bleeds we can kill it is an all-time great line of dialogue), iconic handshake. The best use of Arnie outside of the first two Terminator films. The drip feeding of the Predator and it’s abilities is great storytelling and it’s eventual face reveal is amazing and unforgettable (again, with a great line of dialogue “you are one ugly MF’er). The supporting cast is also great, props to Carl
Weathers and the underrated Bill Duke and the Native American soldier whose name escapes me.
So waffling aside, can’t I just have both? If I had to choose I’d probably lean slightly towards First Blood- but only slightly. And I’d take either of the first two Terminator films over both and probably the first two Alien films. Christ the 80’s was good. You boomers had it made.
Thought they used him for his athleticism and dressed him completely in red to provide the silhouette effect of the alien when camouflaged. Fun fact, Tierney did a full 12 months hard time for tax evasion (quite recently).Van Damme was originally the Predator, he quit. Thankfully they redesigned the alien also. View attachment 178297
