Rail timetable help needed

now you're gonna hear about it
Because what I'm looking at is screwing my head in...

I'm trying to plan a trip around the City game at Goodison, but since the game time isn't set I want to be somewhat flexible in my plans... my airfare ticket options are somewhat limited so I'm looking at two choices:

A) Fly through Manchester (at higher cost)
B) Fly through Heathrow (at lower cost, but have to make the trains)

From what I can tell, none of the trains will get me out on Monday morning in time for my departures from Heathrow back Stateside, so I'd need to opt for a Sunday train between Lime Street and a Southerly destination. Is this feasible? Looks like the Sunday trains are long rides (which may be difficult if the game is moved to Sunday afternoon) or arrive at destination late (not excited about a late hotel checkin with departure the next morning).

Obviously, if the game stays on Saturday it's easier to sort out, but as I'm planning contingencies now I'm not interested in the risk. I'm worried enough the game could be moved to Monday as it is. It just seems that flying through London won't work if the game is moved to Sunday, but that's based on how I'm reading the rail table.

All help appreciated. Sarcastic comments welcome if funny.

Personally..
If I was travelling that far.. I'd just get to Manchester mate..

Wouldn't mind the ride, all other things equal. It's a long/overnight flight over and my first time on your island, so I might enjoy the ride. And the downtime might help adjust for the time difference. Then again, the cost (and time).
