I was desperate for US to try and buy Alonso at the time (we spent £15 million on Felli) but I guess we probably couldn't have afforded his wages.
Needless to say, the kopites got lucky. I think Spain won the World Cup nearly a year later, and Real only had to pay them £20m more than they were asking the previous summer.
Imagine trying to sell Xabi Alonso for the same amount of dollar that you spunked on Ryan Babel!!! He's a good coach, but he's useless in the transfer market.
