....recall Billy Butler bringing many artists to the City during the 60s and 70s. He told a story of him booking a young Stevie Wonder to appear at a Liverpool club and people following him to the gents because they didn’t believe he was blind.

He’d be fascinating to talk to about those times.

Love that one where the answer is John Wayne - “giz a clue please billy”
“The hell I will” in John Wayne accent
“Oh go on Billy, give us a clue will yer”

Yippee.

Load's like him on here, but to my ears he's always been a beaut.

Listening to his show, has been the aural equivalent of 'reading' the S*N.

Vacuous chit chat, self aggrandisement re 'charity', and dodgy music.

He celebrated the lowbrow, and sneered at literature and the arts in general.

Used to enjoy him being the DJ at GP, especially the time he read out a list of names, celebrating a mates birthday,we put Mike Hunt's name in the middle,
did some laughing when he read it out on the PA. happy days.

Like him or not, that’s out of order.

Apologies Groucho, I just felt he was calculated and conscious of appealing to the lowest common denominator.

I worked in factories, where I had to endure his drivel on the radio.

Anyone who called in with any aspirations of learning, he would belittle and ridicule.

He wanted working class people to 'stay in their place', a bit like that newspaper (rag) I was alluding too.

JMHO, sorry if it upset's people.

Hold your Plums was a great hit, and harmless fun Billy and Wally will be remembered for that ......His music he played in later years was not to my taste, but the banter between him, and Wally was priceless...
Also @Eggs was spot on about his drive to get local talent air time was a great feature of his personality, also he was a blue, and a GP match presenter of Music ....
Billy never claimed to be an intellect, and stayed local when offered a spot on radio 2 he played a fart song .....on a late trial showlol that ended his chance there......

One of his funnies while doing the matchday broadcast at GP brought a smile to my face.
He said that Tommy Smith had done a version of a theme tune to a popular BBC show at the time (mid seventies naturally) and had called it When The Boot Comes In.
