Radio City 96.7 end live commentaries of Liverpool FC and Everton FC matches

Station's owners pull plug on 40 years of Merseyside football coverage

Radio City 96.7 will no longer carry live commentaries of Liverpool and Everton matches.

The decision has been taken by owners Bauer Radio as part of a restructuring at the station.

Instead, football coverage will replaced by weekly hour-long shows on a Monday and Friday.

City have been a mainstay at matches involving the Reds and the Blues since they began broadcasting in October 1974.

The likes of ITV's Clive Tyldesley, former ITV man Elton Welsby, former Sky presenter Richard Keys, BBC commentator Steve Bower, Sky Sports Vinny O'Connor, ITV'S Gary Bloom and familiar voices Kevin Keatings and Graham Beecroft spent early parts of their careers working on the sports department at City, with Steve Hothersall and Alan Irwin the most recent regular commentators.

It means BBC Radio Merseyside are now the sole remaining radio broadcasters to provide regular live coverage of Liverpool and Everton games.

Very surprised at that.
