This is happening more and more in the modern game

Could it be something to do with the intensity of training, or the increased usage of things like energy drinks, that are causing players to suffer heart problems?

I don't recall this sort of thing ever happening when I was younger

It's genetics, mostly. See also the earlier post from @RomanReigns

It could be argued that the regular physical activity of pro sports will hasten the onset of a heart attack for those sensitive people. Better screening and understanding is required so we know who might be affected before they even begin their careers.
