Its very impressive in the modern era.only 1 game behind Latchford but with a far superior all round game. One name that jumps out for me is Alan Ball. That's a fantastic ratio for a midfielder

None. It has always been there. In 1925 it was changed from 3 to 2 players between the receiver and the goal

I don't actually think there was such thing as defenders in the 1910s/20s.

Didn't goalkeepers wear gardening gloves up until about the 60s too?

On the contrary. Number of goals scored per game rose by almost 50% when they went from 3 to two for being onside.

If you look at the top scorers goals as a percentage of the total number of goals scored in the league Dean is the clear winner. Shearer second and Cole third. In fact the list is dominated by players from the modern era.

Top 3, you just know it was back in about 1850 when Everton FC was a bunch of lads playing heads and volleys down down Stanley Park, jumpers for goalposts, isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous.

Far superior all round game than Latchford? I wasn't all that fussy on Big Bob but don't see where Lukaku's game is much different to Latchfords, on fact it would be very hard to pick out who was the laziest of the two.
