With the exception of a brief period in the mid 90s - it has. Since the 80s there has been very little music that isn't so.
That's a ridiculous statement. There's a wider variety and amount of music being made now than at any point in history. It just means you can't be arsed to find stuff you like. The charts and radio 1 have always been full of dross.

I am sure there is more (variety of) music now than at any point in history. In history, people singing in public houses were one of the few sources of entertainment therefore more drive for good music to happen. Good songs were requested and played and played over decades.

Today computers select popular rhythms and beats and compile fodder to sell to the masses which entertains them almost to the end of the track .... have you listened to kids playing 30s of 'music' to one another before they say 'try this one'? To the industry the music is secondary, having any old stuff to promote and sell is all.

Sure there's more variety but theres less quality. And yes, I long ago stopped actively trying to find new stuff I like - just as I stopped searching tv listings in the forlorn attempt to find anything vaguely interesting. Given the volume of output today finding a good tune is like looking for a specific single word somewhere in an encyclopedia.
Sometimes something good comes along - I heard a snip of a Passenger song a few years back and it is wonderful - but i don't waste my time looking it hoping anymore.

Personal taste this isn’t it?

That's the thing - with punk and metal, some bands hit me like I chugged three pots of coffee, others do absolutely nothing. Even within the same subgenres. Maiden still gets me moving - really like the faster pace stuff and guitar harmonies. "Ace's High" or "Number of the Beast" will always get me hopping just like anything after Dee Dee blurts out 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4.

A money making con, a genuine musical revolution, under rated, over rated?

Did 17 year old lads from the home counties have a clue when they sung along to SLF anthems?

Google Pretty Vacant kids. Timeless.

Loved the good stuff me.

Over rated....
