I suspect it is largely to do with taxes. From the sounds of it if got paid then he'd be liable for tax on all of his extra curricular income. Dare say he earns more off the pitch than on it.

Yep , if your a permanent resident your liable for that 75% tax on all your income wherever it's earned . That's why beckham is giving away the money, living in a hotel and his missus hasn't moved the figures if he was liable are huge.
