I like this one of his:

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

Does sort of explain why very creative people are often complete arseholes, but no one changed the world by just nodding their head and agreeing with everyone all the time.

Yes, I agree. :D

“If you fail to prepare, you’re prepared to fail.”

Which explains why I've been failing since 1975.

"The only ones who fly are the ones who dare to fly." - Luis Sepulveda

And a more precautionary one:
"Whoever fights with monsters should see to it that he does not become a monster in the process. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
Calvin Coolidge

John Donne - No Man Is An Island

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

And new Philosophy calls all in doubt,
the element of fire is quite put out;
the Sun is lost, and the earth,
and no mans wit
can well direct him where to look for it.
John Donne

Should be some kind of motivation for our politicians to get their collectives asses in gear and sort out the parliamentary mess we are in...

Not the rubbish spouted by posters or those employed to improve the performance of an underpaid staff .... a place for our favourite quotations to help when we need a lift.

I'll kick off with this - I'd argue one of the greatest speeches ever written to sum up humanity. Actually makes me well up when I read it.

Carl Sagan remarking on a unique photo of earth as a speck, taken by the distant Voyager spacecraft:

I love that, and anyone who reads it while looking at the actual Family Portrait that NASA produced will understand it 1000 times better than just reading it.

When you know that it took 40 plus years of planning and travel to get to the edge of our solar system, and when you turn around and see this blue speck of dust and stuff that we call Home, its truly scary.

I always get a kick out of Lincoln wallowing in misery, before going on to be the most important president in US history.

I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on earth. Whether I shall ever be better, I cannot tell; I awfully forbode I shall not. To remain as I am is impossible. I must die or be better, as it appears to me.
