Live sports are the last bastion of the television ad. They're a poor buy if you're targeting anything other than older males (hence all the erectile dysfunction ads for decades here in the States), but if you're going for broad-spectrum reach there really isn't a digital substitute.
Networks then pony up for the rights to sell those ads accordingly. It'll be interesting to see if the whole house of cards comes tumbling down when the TV generation finally passes on.
Yeah the 2019-2022 overseas rights aren't equally divided like they were before.
