Player Valuation: £35m
News story in the Times and Metro stating that the Premier League clubs are proposing that from 24/25 season

  • All FA Cup replays are scrapped
  • Teams in UEFA competitions field u21 teams in the league cup, or not enter it at all.
They are doing this because from 24/25 season the champions league will be bigger and they need to find room in the calendar for 2 more games

I think this obviously devalues the league cup, but it may see different winners each season, so may be more interesting

Will be a big blow to lower league clubs scrapping replays
Regarding the league Cup that will mean a club will basically never be able to win it twice in a row

Should have let the big 6 walk.

The reality is they’ve pushed and poked at football now for years, to get their own way, and they won’t stop until they get it streamlined to their desires.

Recent requests include

  • MORE Cash Spinning Champions League games - Including potentially in different continents
  • LESS FA Cup games, impacting lower league sides of money spinning replays, in the old cup competition in the world
  • SCRAP the League cup and completely devalue it, because of “player fatigue” - 20 games more in Europe is sound though
  • They’ve tried to ring-fence revenue in the league to be not equally distributed
  • Created a “winter” break in February
  • Cried about needing more subs - agreed to on 4th proposal
  • Moaned about the cap on away fan tickets
What’s the point? Effectively winning the League Cup becomes meaningless now, because you won’t be given a place in Europe for it?

This. If the game is just going to bend over backwards for them and get rid of everything that made it special then what's the point? 86 is a bigger number than 6, last I checked.

Keep the replays.
Teams in Europe can field whatever team they want to field IMO.

Just wait for the fans to kicks off about it

Drop the league cup semi final over 2 legs and play it on a neutral ground saves a game IMO

This is what i dont understand, they can field a u21 side now, they dont have to play the first team, if they choose too thats on them

Look at City though...the chairman wants them to compete in every comp. They've won the league cup 6 times in about 10 years. The FA Cup twice. 0 European cups.

I don't think managers actively want to not play in the cups as we all know they take it seriously by the quarters. I just think it's more the media gloss that has taken a shine off them rather than them being irrelevant.

Exactly. Unless it's mandatory for them, I don't see how a manager takes it in the chin that if they get to the semi final of the league cup playing the under 23s that he doesn't want to go and win it but isn't allowed to

The replays are so beneficial to smaller clubs in lower leagues, they’re a massive boost to their revenue if they get a big draw at a PL ground. This is all about protecting the scab 6 because of too many games for these cry arse managers! Koff with these proposals the FA cup and their replays are one of the most prestigious aspect in English football.

I'm not sure anyone other than UEFA and the TV companies wanted more champions League games. Clubs being against the crap new format was what triggered the Super League talk in the first place.

As much as it would be nice to see other teams winning the domestic cups, they will be devalued. Would be surprised if the league cup didn’t get scrapped down the line.

It tells you what we already knew - the big clubs see the league and the Champions League as the only 'real' competitions due to the magnitude of the dollar signs, want to increase the revenue from the Champions League as fast as possible to lock everyone else out, and will cheerfully throw other clubs a bone on the League Cup since they no longer feel it is a pot worth winning.

Like so much of our society, sports is now consumed by greed. In part, this is because money translates into wins. The loyalty of the fans, whose purchases enable the large paychecks, is taken for granted. The lower division clubs lack a voice at the decision-making table, which is why they get dumped on.

If someone wanted to clean it up, that would require governance changes and a lot more revenue sharing. That can't be done unilaterally within England, unless clubs and fans decide they don't mind getting pasted in Europe in order to have healthier domestic competitions. What the game needs is a conversation across federations on how to produce both a better fan experience and a more level playing field.

A Super League would simply be an admission that the largest clubs are so dependent upon foreign revenue that they can't afford to do that without collapsing. It's not the worst idea in the world, provided that it's not a closed shop. If the winners of the biggest domestic leagues got in, the worst-performing teams from each domestic league got relegated from the Super League and there was a pathway for entrance and exit for clubs outside of the biggest leagues, it could work.

If the teams in Europe are withdrawn from the League Cup it basically strips away nearly all of it's value, would just be another Papa John's trophy. A day out at Wembley for a prize that means nothing. The prestige in winning trophies is knowing how have out-done all the other teams to get your hands on it, even if you didn't directly play them. The best teams deciding to field weakened sides is a decision they make and have to live with.

My idea for a re-vamp would basically be have 64 teams, 10 from the PL, 12 each from Championship, Leagues One and Two, and 18 from the National League. All clubs involved drawn randomly out of a hat before the ties themselves are sorted. No PL club can be in it 3 years running and the winners don't automatically get a place the following year. It would obviously take some working out and tweaks but overall it would give it a unique identity and a far different from any other competition which is ultimately what it needs to get people interested.
