"Everton, in particular, appear to have significantly over-performed, having qualified for the Champions League once (2004/05) and additionally qualifying for UEFA Cup play three times (2006/07, 2007/08, 2008/09)."

I saw something similar a couple of years ago on Toffeeweb. Think it might have been done by one of the resident stattos on there. Can't remember the details but similar results. With only Bolton getting anywhere near our position while paying less per point. Terrible return for Sunderland..

It's an amazing table. It really shows how the organisation is running on fumes and getting mileage.

*Wonders what more money could achieve*

Would be interesting to see the effect the inclusion of transfer fees would have also. However we can't just assume that we would do better with more £££, not that I'd turn it down. Just need to be careful we don't turn into a West Ham, Newcastle or Sunderland!! :o

The other way to look at it is that it's pretty difficult to sustain. As the report I linked to states:

"Everton appear to have punched above their weight since David Moyes’ arrival at Goodison Park, with four Euro appearances in the six seasons of the study. But the club’s perennial poor starts to the season, replicated again thus far in 2010/11, may cast doubts upon the long-term sustainability of the blues strategy of operating a Euro Contender squad, without marquee strikers, and with so many inexperienced and young players. While Everton easily meets the new PL squad guidelines for domestic players, their low budget strategy results in thin squad depth."

This blatantly shows how good a manager DM is. If was as simple as spend more $ to win more pts then surely sunderland should be playin CL ball
