i thought this meant for england/GB, rodwell heitinga and phill neville will take one of the over 23 spots for team GB because of his experience and pointing nous

Oman or Senegal have a playoff this month at Coventry to see who qualifies.

Why bother?

There could be some ugly scores in the group stages ... if there are group stages ... some of these teams might want to consider going home immediately after the opening ceremony.

Not a bad idea actually for one of the over 23 spots. Especially with the young teams having someone to organize things would be important. Gibson wouldn't be a bad idea for GB. What's the status of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh players anyway? Are their respective FAs still acting like this would bring an end to football? Last I heard the players were free to play but they would be "discouraged" ... chance at an Olympic medal I think I'd risk the wrath of not being picked for a failed WC qualification bid.

Bet you get some good bites on that one mate. Even if it's mostly west brits hanging around this site.

gibbo is from ROI so he wouldnt be in the olymic squad, but he should at least get in their euro squad. I dont think wales are blocking any players, just won't be happy. I want to see some of the welsh boys get in there, use to play cricket with joe allen, hes a top top lad and deserves a place based on this season. Also i am almost certain FIFA aren't going to want to merge a country as big as england

I checked wiki and saw his place of birth and assumed he was eligible but didn't actually read the article where it says he plays for ROI. I know almost nothing of international football. Spain are terrible right?

I agree it's never going to happen ... just have a nice once off get together for the olympics ... really doesn't have to be a big deal but no "association" involved with football can ever do anything sensible. The whole concept of countries seems like something we should have done away with years ago (I lived in lots of them -- they all suck) but people get so wound up about it.
