Potential New Changes from FIFA

Player Valuation: £100m
Thought i'd start a new thread on this subject as all possible changes coming from FIFA can be discussed as one then, mods feel free to merge if necessary.

So toady the BBC has run with the story about Football possibly following Rugby Union's stance on only the captain being authorised to speak to the referee on the pitch. This is one of the many aspects i've been banging the drum about as a faultless rule which should be brought into the game, this will make the lives and hopefully the performance of referees a lot easier and fingers crossed will lead to better decisions being made based on opinion rather than cracking under the pressure.

FIFA have used the Club world cup to trial this, as well as video technology, personally i hope both of these implementations get passed and i can go back to actually enjoying the sport i love.

Fifa is discussing whether to allow only captains to speak to referees, says former Netherlands striker and manager Marco van Basten.

It would bring football in line with rugby union, which has strict rules around in-match communication.

Van Basten, Fifa's chief technical development officer, said there have been talks about how to improve player behaviour and respect for officials.

"There are a lot of players now who are complaining during a game," he said.

Speaking to the BBC, the former Ajax and AC Milan forward added: "I am sure the behaviour of the players can be better - we are thinking about putting it back in the right direction."

At the start of this season, English football announced plans to reduce "intolerable behaviour" by issuing red cards to players who confront match officials, use offensive language or make gestures towards them.

Fifa, football's world governing body, has recently introduced trials of video referees - where the match official can watch a pitch-side replay of key incidents on a small monitor.

It was used in this month's Club World Cup - and was commended by Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

"This is what we have to do to help the referees," Van Basten said about the introduction of technology and discussions around changing other rules.

"We try to make a good product - dynamic, exciting, but in the end also honest.

"There's a lot of emotion in the game and that's what's good - but we have to control it also."

Asked about comparisons with rugby, Van Basten replied: "I think we can learn from every sport and they can learn from us - but we have to confront the problem."

In rugby, only the captain is allowed to speak directly to the referee. In return, the referee is asked to communicate directly with the captain only.

I, as we all would hope much more aspects will be trailed and brought in to clean up the game, what are the aspects which everyone thinks are a MUST to be altered/introduced to football?

Does the rule still apply that a free kick gets moved 10 yards for dissent,I havent seen it applied for ages

great question. I would imagine it's still a rule, but just never enforced because it seems like a rule for kids and not adults (which would be laughable if true). But yeah, i haven't sen it applied for years either.

Works well in rugby as a means of enforcing discipline and the integrity of the referee's ability to make decisions without being hounded.

I remember the referee doing it in the Wales vs Scotland six nations match at the Millennium Stadium about four or five years ago.

Scottish captain and his players had a moan over a decision and the referee instantly moved the penalty forward within kicking range of the posts.

They soon remembered how to graciously play the game...

No, they scrapped that rule pretty quickly. It was only in place for a season or two.

Amazing really, a tangible punishment for dissent, and they never enforced it, then scrapped it. Yet the refs bleat about abuse.

I think it should be the case that no players approach the ref apart from the captai, and then the scenario should be that the ref explains his decision in a matter of seconds to the captain (Yellow 8 pulled the shirt of Blue 6) and is then told to move away.

For as long as I can remember (and I'm going back to the days of youth when I played rugby at school) in rugby if a decision is given against you and you do not retreat 10 yards, then the play is moved forward 10 yards, and continues to do so until the defending team comply. That should be applied rigorously in football - how many times do you see a free kick given and an opposition player stading a yard in front of the ball. The ref should simply say 'Back 10, immediately' and if the player doesn't do so, he gets a yellow card. In a matter of weeks, once the message gets home, you will soon see compliance.

But for me, the greater problem is the refs NOT complying with the simple instructions relating to offences. We have seen in recent weeks two examples of Rojo being fully of the ground and going in with two feet raised, studs showing. Each time, he was given a yellow card. An absolute joke!

And another thing that bugs me: refs appear to not know the difference between shielding the ball and obstruction. SHielding is when a player has contact with the ball and is using his body to cover the movement of the opponent; obstruction is when we see defenders time after time deliberately blocking the path of an opponent to the ball to prevent them reaching the ball, without going anywhere near the ball.

Could take the rugby example further and have a 10 minute sin bin for dissent or player action(s) somewhere between a yellow & red. Gives the opposition an advantage without potentially ruining a game.

I would also like to see the ball actually in the corner markings too not that there is an advantage to putting it just outside as is the modern trend but rules is rules

I think that rule that if you don't move away from the ball you get a yellow, it's just very rarely used at the moment. The only time players seem to get yellow now for that action is if someone deliberately kicks the ball at them, I wish our players would do that more when opposition are stopping quick free kicks, the problem is we have no intent of taking quick free quicks anyway so never have that enthusiasm

Jimmy Hill used to advocate this. He pointed out that if the free kick moved forward into the penalty area it would become a penalty.

Just to say I see no merit whatever in football copying any rules from rugby.

Not sin bins, not players other than the captain being allowed to speak to the ref, not continuing playing the game long after the whistle should have blown if the ball has remained in play......not owt.

Thank you and Merry Christmas ;)

it would be a blow for the UK punditry, much of which is barely capable of anything beyond bloviating about refereeing decisions and the pantomimes that inevitably follow

I would like to see the fake rolling round the floor to be tackled, if you do this then you should stay of the pitch for 3 minutes on the sidelines while you get checked out by the medical team.
