I've just been informed by my employer that I'm possibly being sent to the UK - and will find myself in either London or Liverpool.

I've taken holidays outside the US before, but it's always been either Canada or Mexico. I've never been "overseas". If by chance this happens, can someone give me a few words of advice? How to get game tickets, ways to avoid looking like a clueless American, etc? Again, this is only a possibility - but it's got me excited.

Ok, head into the GOT dictionary thread:

Also, start watching shows like Rab C Nesbitt and get to the point where you can understand what they are saying without reading subtitles. I know it is scottish, but it will give you the diversity to start understanding some of the thicker accents around the country.

Believe me, I know how stupid the request sounds. That said, I've wanted to come to England for basically my entire life, and making that trip from the States is outrageously expensive for a single guy. Now that I have a work-based chance to spend 3-6 months there, I want to hit the ground running. What I forgot to mention is that this is a potential prerequisite for a permanent move.

Then again, friends have told me that going in cold and learning the ropes organically is better, especially since I'm going to a country that's not that different culturally and where I already speak the language.

You probably need to speak to Nik mate... he'll point you on the right path.

sy though, you'lll be fine.... I would rather Liverpool to London from a purely financial viewpoint but the other way around for culture. I'm probs not the best to offer advice to be honest. Good luck mate !!

You can get tickets from the ground or the Everton 2 store at Liverpool 1, just check when on the website when tickets go on sale and what time the box office opens. You can also phone the club for tickets and can have them posted (keep an eye on when the cutoff date for postage is though) or you can also collect them from the box office as well. When do you find out where you'll be based by the way?

So not long that long then. You'll be alright wherever your base will be, echoing what Kurt said, but London is very diverse, so virtually everything is there, just the commuting is expensive if you were to use it getting around and the cost of living is more expensive there than it is in Liverpool. Also, Liverpool is a lot smaller than London, so you're never too far away from somewhere you need to get to, also means you're never too far from Goodison (y)

give us regular up-dates of how things are going and what stands out to you. There will be a lot more cultural differences than you think ( use Alistair Cooke as an atavar )
