3-5-2

Howard

Jags Rodwell Distin

Coleman Baines

Fellaini Gibson Cahill

Jelavic Drenthe

I think you can fit more round pegs into round holes here. Theres a growing trend in European football for a central ball-playing midfielder to play at CB either in a 2 or 3 who can step out and play from the back which would encourage Fellaini to push forward a tad more and influence the game in the final 3rd.

For me Drenthe has to play off a centre forward, hes much more effective running through the middle than from out-wide and could be a real threat from deep with his shooting and unpredictability. This formation needs an all-round centre forward and Jelavic would be best suited.

Im aware the lack of width makes this formation easy to stop and limits where the threat comes from but very few sides create chances from wide areas

I would like something similar to that,

HOWARD
JAGS HEITS DISTIN

COLEMAN FELLAINI GIBSON RODWELL BAINES

DRENTHE/PIENAR

STRAQ/JELLI

I think Baines and coleman would give us the width, i also would have Gibson sat in front of the back 3 so rodwell and felli could push on and support the front men.

no-one plays wing backs anymore, this is because full backs are now expected to do the job of a wing back without the need for an extra central defender, football has moved on

Disagree modern day full backs are wing backs, the way that formation would work is you would get a Jags and Distin splitting wide with Jack bringing the ball from the centre of the defence into midfield therefore ensuring the whole pitch has a passing option

Playing 3 at the back can be a nightmare though. Its not a formation that can just be thrown out every week. If you play up against 3 strikers you could be in massive trouble.

We do have the players to do it I suppose. You could even throw Hibbert in there at CB as you wont need the extra height with 3 CBs in there.

What ive been saying for yonks. Great formation in theory, 3-5-2 when attacking but 5-3-2 when defending. Plus its the only way you could play both Coleman and Baines on the backline together...

...Wether it would work i dont know, id be happy to see it experimented with in friendlies at the start of the season. It would get the most out of Baines and Coleman, means we attack more, and defend more too

Horse poo.

Baines isnt the best at defending, you just had to look at the gap between him and the opposing players at Man City. Having Coleman on the other wing will be worse, he cant defend as well as we need. The only way id play both would be if we had 3 CB and therefore they both had someone to cover them

how does everyone know coleman is rubbish at defending as a right back when hes hardly played there?! im guessing you watched all of blackpools games when he was on loan there?

The formation has been fine, not sure why he'd change it. If he did, I'm fairly certain that it wouldn't be to go with 3 in the back.
