Hello all. I am amazed as ever, based on my newbie status, at the learned observations of those on this site, as well as others following Everton elsewhere. But here's my observation based on my short tenure following BPL. Maybe its just the same as other sports, but is it all as simple as big teams run the sport ?? Does money count for everything ? Why, as a BPL fan, would I accept the fact that Mcity, Arsenal, Liverpool and MU control each year's championship ? I realize that TV money is split for the most part, but lets face it......larger stadiums rule and larger sponsorships make smaller teams drool. In spite of the NFL model, where smaller teams make a bundle while running their clubs like morons (yes, a direct reference to the Oakland Raiders .....the most dysfunctional team in history...), why doesn't a smaller team Kop an attitude and get it done ?? While the BPL is [Poor language removed] against the best in the world, why not make it a level playing field and make the product better than it is? Just stirring the [Poor language removed] as it were......

Okay, so I'm not so enthralled with pineapple on pizza.....nyuk nyuk nyuk

Best Regards,
tim

Because if a "big team" is failing to get the job done they can throw money at the team until it does get the job done. In order for a team to break the top four from outside of the moneyed clubs they'd have to recruit really well and retain their key players whilst having an incredible run of luck and form. I still hold hope that we can do it but will need a lot of luck as in my mind we are two to three quality players short of it in goal, attacking playmaker and Striker.

As an aside swearing isn't permitted on the site.

Sports in Europe: pure brutal survival of the fittest capitalism

Sports in America: Govt funded socialism

The closest thing to american style big time footie is in Germany where no moneybags owner can own more than 50 percent of a club. Which is also a league in which Bayern will win somewhere between 12-15 titles in the next 20 years.

Ok, I'm going to try to make sense of all that! I'm interpreting this as you are asking, why the BPL/EPL is dominated by a handful of teams with a lot of $ and why they don't try to level the playing field.
Firstly, I think that most (all?) Evertonians and indeed most other (non top 4 or 5 club) supporters would agree with your sentiments. Even among the top 4 or 5 they complain about the other team having too much money.
I guess the main reason why PL is harder to control than NFL (or some other sports) is that it is part of a global market. The BPL is competing against other leagues (La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga etc) and they want to attract the best players so that it can get the best broadcasting deal/s. Therefore it is in their interest to allow lots of money to come into the clubs to buy the best players. If they brought in a salary cap or similar it might mean that players went to other competitions, reducing the global value of the league and the broadcasting revenue.
I guess the next question is why is that money concentrated in a few top teams? This is probably a mixture of good fortune and good timing as well as commercial reality. So, some clubs like ManUre and RS (Arsenal to a lesser extent) have big global fan bases who attract big sponsors etc. When the PL came along and became a global (TV) product those same clubs then benefited from a massive increase in global fans (eg China) who "didn't know their history" to have even bigger fan bases. Only the more discerning and knowledgeable fans (like your good self) picked out (or were chosen as) Everton. In addition, we had a few Billionaires, with very deep pockets, who wanted a BPL team as a play thing or marketing vehicle (like Chelsea and Man City).
Given the money those top 4-5 teams have, allows them to buy the best players which allows them to stay on top and to qualify to the UCL which in turn brings more money, sponsorship, fans etc. So, basically you have a system that is almost self perpetuating and the people in power (FA, PL, Broadcasters, top teams) have no interest in breaking up that cartel.
In fairness to the BPL, the way the money is divided up is far fairer than some leagues (esp La Liga) but other commercial revenue still means that there is a huge gap between the leading 4-5 clubs and the rest.

You put Red Sh1te instead of Chelsea also...

Business models exist so that investors stay at the top level and don't lose their money. The Champions League payments and subsequent tv and sponsorship is so high that the only way to break into it is with a billionaire owner. People blame it on the billionaire owners as the fault, it isn't, it's the distribution of wealth at the top level that's disproportionate.

Id add that continued failiure of the English CL teams increase the chances for someone to crack the top 4, think evidence of that can be seen partially happening last two seasons, would be pure everton that wed get 4th the year they reduce our places to 3 like
