Ok, this is from the Telegraph, so a Tory rag

So they're not killing the NHS, and they're not bludgeoning the welfare system. Indeed they pay more in taxes than they 'consume'.

FFS folks, this is basic in group/out group psychology at play here. Cameron et al are trying to get you all behind him by raising your fear of folks that are different. We're all in this together, it's the funny foreigners that are ruining us. Lets all stick together (behind Tory leadership). You're being played for suckers.

This is the breakdown for London btw

You'll notice that the EU migration that many of you are complaining about isn't really an issue. Now that's a powder keg you can bet your life no politician will touch.

the issue is though its a domino's effect, for the so called lack of benefits that migrants recieve it only gets pushed onto the British unemployed and the young just out of school who have barely a chance of finding steady employment now. We are in a country of heavy unemployment so whats the Governments answer let in millions of more unskilled migrants to lower the already poor wages and flood the already heavily competitive jobs market its crazy.

Their was a report on the guardian how everyone should stick together over this issue then they interviewed a Polish worker who was asked would he worry over new migrants arriving nexy year and he said "no its survival of the fittest in the job market if your not strong you wont survive" bad statement for the Socialist Guardian they then interviewed a polish lady who said if this was happening back in her fathers town in Poland they would be scared and angry.

Got to agree I've found the attitude of many of the European immigrants I've chatted to on various jobs to be frighteningly "**** the weak, the devil take the hindmost", pure, unreconstructed Thatcherite.

That Polish guy is right. If you hire someone, you want to hire the best for the job, their nationality is irrelevant.

I don't know where you get this idea that 'millions of unskilled migrants' are flooding into the country.

Data shows that over half of migrants are highly skilled, and often work in jobs that aren't suitably grand for their skill level. Where was that thing about British workers too good to work in menial jobs?

The important bits for you.

1) Immigrants are more skilled than the domestic workforce. Just 10% of new immigrants left school at 16, compared to 50% of the native population.
2) Immigrants are less likely to be in social housing than natives
3) There is no evidence of an overall negative impact on wages caused by immigration

part of a bigger pan european sceme reidy, low wages, less work rights , less full time jobs and uncertainty and living in rented homes adds up to a very nice enviroment for those with there snout in the troff , if you dont work for peanuts we know someone who will, oh cant pay your rent because you lost your job get out, then the future is bright

A nailed on view of modern day Britain and as you said, Europe on a whole.

Bloody good post mate.

You don't have to screw everyone Bruce to get on in life - in fact quite the reverse. Win - win mentality is far superior to win-lose as it was under Thatcher

Why is it win-lose? I mean you run a business. Your customers choose you because you're the best company for the job, right? That's not a case of you screwing over your competitors, and I dare say you're accepting of the fact that you need to be the best company for the job in order to keep the business.

That kind of attitude is a very good thing in my opinion. If you're going about it in a snidey way then that's different, but striving to be the best you can be is very admirable.

I'll tell you why Bruce - I run my businesses so that my customers (who are other businesses) can grow their businesses and buy more off me in the future - that's a win win.

Some of my competitors run their businesses as if they are in competition with their customers, you can work out the results yourself.

My earlier comments refer to the mentality of the individual, espoused by Thatcher that you should win at all costs with little consideration for anyone else, an undeniable legacy of the Thatcher era which has caused such huge social problems in today's society.

Maybe we took different things from what the chap was supposed to have said. I'm very much with you on this, and personally try to be the best I can but do so with some integrity. I'm sure there are others that try and succeed through other means.

I think what is hard to deny though is that it's very, very rare for success to fall into ones lap, and the mentality that society owes you a job or a living is pretty dangerous. It takes a lot of hard work, and that is the case now more than ever before because of the globalised society we live in. It's not the case that you're competing for work with other lads in your village any more.

In the past 30-40 years we've had women enter the workforce in huge numbers, we've had migrants come into the country, we've had globalisation offer companies a global workforce to choose from, and of course technology has had a big impact as well.

Those changes are not likely to be going away any time soon. If people are coming to Britain and are prepared to work in jobs below their skill level to work their way up or to work extra hours or for lower money then they have nothing but my admiration.

I'm reading that a bit differently to you.

You can't really compare the education as its not like for like. Just because someone is in further education doesn't mean they're more skilled than natives. Immigrants are over represented in low skilled jobs. And a student visa is a way into the country anyway.

It stands to reason that immigrants would be less represented in social housing.

And the last bit is just laughable. I know that for a fact.

Yet Germany is the strongest nation in Europe but it also has a completely different attitude.

Look ffs.

It is a problem that hasn't been managed efectivly. We need skilled migrants to come over and be doctors, dentists, scientists etc.

We do not need Gustov from Romania to build our motorways and to deal with his extra curricular activities with his pals. We have enough working class people to be looking after and getting into work as it is. 'He will do it for 20p an hour though' is not an excuse.

Accept that we need immigration, but also accept that our levels have gone way way way too far and have caused a hell of a lot of problems. End of the day if it hadn't, it would be such a big issue. Jeez.
