Playing “Advantage”

Udderly delicious
Now I do like it when a ref plays “advantage” following a foul but I struggle to understand why the ref doesn’t call back play for a free kick if advantage doesn’t accrue within, say, 10-15 seconds.

If that’s going to be the case, don’t play advantage at all?

It’s less than 10 seconds I believe anyway so that’s probably why.

There was a case in point in yesterday’s match between Leicester and Arsenal where a Leicester player was fouled quite badly but the ball broke to one of their forwards so ref waved play on but the attacker was tackled almost immediately, lost the ball and Arsenal went in the attack and nearly scored. Ref then went back and booked the original Aresenal fouler.
Where was the advantage here?

I think the offical rule is, if Everton are benefiting from the advantage then the time allowed is 0.5 of a second from the time of the offence to be able to bring it back.

If any other team playing Everton get the advantage then that advantage will remain until that team scores, if not play can be brought back to the free kick at any time when they have lost possession of the football.

Would really change the game.

Teams would just full on to for goal in those seconds knowing that if they're dispossessed they've got the security of the free kick.

Surely we should adopt the RU version where if there is no clear advantage leading to points scored or a goal in football then the play is brought back and a free kick is awarded to the aggrieved team.

Funnily enough I often see Liverpool have advantage and then have it brought back if nothing comes of it. Other teams not so much.

Referees just don't understand advantage. The amount of times you see a ref wave advantage when a team's 1-0 up in the last minute and just wants a free kick to slow the game down and set themselves up properly is ridiculous. I'm not sure how the rule is written but it often seems to me that once the ref plays advantage the chance of a free kick being given is virtually nil. Quite regularly you see advantage given then the ball immediately lost with no comeback for a free kick. It's a bit of a joke really.

The advantage give the player the chance, not a guarantee, anything after that is in the lap of the gods.

Been looking at FA rules on this.

“ADVANTAGE- allows play to continue when an offence has occurred and the non-offending team will benefit from the advantage and penalise the offence if the anticipated advantage does not ensue at that time or within a few seconds”

To my mind that is too woolly and I think if the ball is lost by the non-offending team within one further play ie a pass going astray or a tackle made where the ball is lost , the ref should then blow for the original offence. That would remove the “few seconds” bit and allow for a bit more advantage
