Once a blue always a....
I am just reading someone talking about the cleverly possinility and that he may come in as a player plus cash "makeweight" for McCarthy.
I know McCarthy is going nowhere but it got me to thinking...this time of year we often see rumours and chatter about cash plus player deals. I cannot ever remember seeing such a deal actually happen. Or am I just being a bit dim.
How would you feel if you were the makeweight player .....the whole concept whilst it makes some kind of fiscal sense seems to be a bit of a motivational issue with the incoming player
Does anybody remember a player plus cash deal that went through ? Did it work ? What happened next ?

Only works if you need the player in question.

Otherwise it's just a way of getting screwed over by the purchasing club.

The only way it works work is if contracts were actually enforced. The way it works now, when a player is transferred they sign a new deal. If contracts were enforced (and then new deals were negotiated down the road when the contracts were up) then you could do swaps more often.

didn't chelsea do it with matic?

Yeah Matic went from Chelsea to Benfica plus £20mil (I think) for Luiz going the other way. Seems to have worked out well for both clubs, even with Chelsea bringing Matic back for £20mil.

So Chelsea effectively signed Luiz for £40mil, should make some sort of profit on him going to PSG and Matic got a couple of seasons of first team football at Benfica.

An obvious one that worked quite well was Eto'o, who went to Inter as part of the Ibrahimavic transfer to Barcelona. He went on to be an integral part of the treble winning side.

That was a crazy deal. Eto'o, one of the best strikers in the world at the time, plus £55mil was it?

And, as you say, Eto'o did really well but Ibra fell out with Guardiola and only lasted one season.

One that I remember was the Danny Williamson deal with David Unsworth going the other way, didn't we pay them cash also or visa versa. He was pretty highly rated at the time. Shame it all turned out so badly.
