Surprised to see DeBruyne winning this so far.

I think de bruyne all the way btw, but expected to see Pirlo as he’s “sexy” in footballing terms.

Both great, but De Bruyne is so underrated, which says a lot as the media do hype him... he’s that good.

That penalty made Joe Hart question his own god complex and turned him into the collapsed husk of a man we see today
Just watched that shootout again. That penalty shifted the momentum.

Will never understand why keepers guess. Always at least one poor pen from each side. Wait for it and you save it. Especially the ones down the middle.

How many pens send the keeper the wrong way and commentators say great pen? Usually luck (50/50) as the keeper and the taker are committed.

With more historical distance, KDB will go down as the better passer, mostly because his career isn't over and he's racked up more impressive stats/assists as of now. Pirlo was wizard and had a preternatural understanding of the game.

I remember reading a study about this. A fair amount of PKs go down the center, like 25% or so (I can't remember the actual number)...so you should expect the goalkeeper to not dive and stay in the center about 25% of the time; but they feel--so it says--compelled to dive because if they just sit there and don't dive when the kick goes to one of the corners it will look as if they didn't try, even though staying in the center and not diving is as valid a strategy as diving to the correct side or diving the wrong way.

15 - 20(?)yrs ago some guy got a grant to study just this.

He watched 1500 pens viewed from behind the goal.
In some large number, like 90+%, when the none kicking is planted, the direction it points...centre, just left or right of centre, obviously left or right of centre gave clear indication where the ball ended up.

Given that keepers are there in part for their relexes, that time between the none kicking foot landing and the kicking foot hitting the ball, should give the keeper better odds than 50 - 50...if they use it.

Try it...asssuming you're right footed.

Set yourself to the middle of (real or imaginary) goal to take a penno.
Plant your left, none kicking foot, pointing slightly left of centre, then, using your right foot, try putting the ball to your right, the keepers left.
Repeat;
Plant your left, none kicking foot, slightly left of centre, then using your right foot, try to place the ball to your left, the keepers right...its much more natural and easier

The none kicking foot is 'the tell' - its pointing the way...not every time, all the time, but enough tombe better than 50/50

Just tried it in the kitchen (imaginary pen and no ball).

Mrs just says "what are you doing soft $hite).

Agree though. My standing foot was angled in the direction but it was very slight. Interesting concept. In real time though the keeper would be looking at the standing foot for the clue and then refocus on the ball whilst committing to a dive.

Coaches and keepers must have tried all kinds. I still think that it's the pressure of the situation in a shootout which leads to more poor attempts which is why I think keepers should wait. It would be hard to test in training because under no pressure the penalty taker should score all day long.
