Almost to the minute, 25 years ago, the fateful decision was made to switch on a condensate pump that was offline for maintenance, starting a chain of events that led to the worst ever oilfield disaster in which 167 men lost their lives.

A sad day for anyone in the industry but thankfully lessons have been learnt from the disaster and the North Sea installations are safer now than ever before.

RIP the 167.

good post there jock.

As a significant investor in O&G Companies, the greatest legacy is that around the world health and safety standards are much improved compared to 25 years ago.

Nevertheless that is scant consolation to the families of the 167 - RIP

My best mate as a kid, his dad and his uncle both used to work the rigs.

His dad broke his arm or leg (can't remember which) but due to that he couldn't fly out. His uncle did and died in the disaster.

RIP Andy's uncle and the other 166

R.I.P.

Piper Alpha was sat on Seaforth dock for years where my arl fella worked. Whilst it was being stripped down Police were there in case anyone was found. It was there for years whilst they had the enquiry. It was floated around the coast on a huge barge that cost about a million quid a day.
