Recall reading that some birds have tiny bits of metal in their brains that work with the magnetic poles. I’m serious.

how on earth do they know how to get home, even if they have been dropped hundreds of miles away..

They have an ability to sense the earth's magnetic field. Some kind of compass in their brain. And since they clearly have nothing else to think about other than breeding, food and where theyre going; and don't rely on listening to a gps delivered in a yoda voice, or get distracted by choosing the next mp3 they have to listen to, they they concentrate on the simple reality of where they're going.
