Everton manager David Moyes backs Steven Pienaar to 'go up another gear'
Published 23:00 22/09/09 By David Maddock
Everton boss David Moyes has challenged Steven Pienaar to take the responsibility that comes with being a top class player.
The Goodison manager is convinced his South African winger is ready to take the next step up and become one of the leading stars of the Premier League.
And Moyes believes that will come when Pienaar is happy to take the pressure that comes with running the Everton team.
"I think Steven is ready to go up another gear - that's what I'm looking from him now," Moyes said.
"He could go on and stamp his authority on games by making goals, scoring them and making more final, telling passes. When you see him play for South Africa, he takes a lot of responsibility for his team.
"He has got a lot of their hopes as a nation on his shoulders, and he can do that for Everton. It's like Joseph Yobo - he has got a lot of that in Nigeria and Tim Cahill has the same with Australia.
"We would be looking for those boys to show that for their club. I'm looking forward to getting Mikel [Arteta] back with Steven in the team. When we get that, we will have a really exciting team."
Moyes will rest key players for the visit to Hull in the Carling Cup tonight, and he wants his youngsters to prove they can be the next crop of exciting stars to emerge at the club.

I have to agree. He's the boss of the South African national team. Would love to see him be like that for the sweetiemen.

True. He needs tieing up on a new contract because he will be off for next to nothing.

He's odd on for Player of the Season so far. He gets that, he might be persuaded to stay. That and he's playing the best footy he has done for years, fans love him, Yak loves him ahahaha

We need to get him to sign the new contact....It has all gone quiet on that front. Increasingly he is becoming important to us....There will be clubs sniffing around in Jan mark my words , if we don't seal the deal soon.
