Phoenix Nights v. The Office

Deffo. Merchant especially is the perfect foil, almost, for Gervais. If you listen to the old XFM radio shows and podcasts with Karl Pilkington you can almost pick up on the exact scenes and bits Merchant came up with for the Office. He’s a brilliant story teller, and I think that’s evident in a lot of the seemingly mundane dialogue which adds to the character of the show. I can imagine he did a lot of reigning in of Gervais too.

The xfm podcasts are arguably funnier than both these series, they were amazing
