Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP

you have no idea what you're talking about.

addicts are, by definition, physiologically or psychologically dependent on a habit-forming substance:

therefore given the option of help, the majority cannot see past their dependence or their need for their next fix/hit/pint, whatever it is. To be so dismissive of the problem is only adding to it.

as my old nan used to say......there but for the grace of god go I.

I dont give a toss what you think pal.

Addicts know what they are getting themselves into, and it's the rest of us who end up suffering because of it, so save it for someone who cares. My dad/cousins had ample opportunity to fix themselves - they are the only people who can do it by the way and chose not to. Just like Seymour Hoffman - off it 20 years then gets back onto it and overdoses, not like he didnt know that heroin is addictive is it.

Now his kids have to grow up without a dad because he was too weak to stay off it.

And for the record I know exactly what I'm talking about, I know the psychological effects of addictions, I also know the physical effects of it - I've witnessed it all first hand so dont give me all of your 'for the grace of god' s**t because none of that helps.

think we all just need to calm down a bit

this is after all a remembrance thread for the loss of a huge talent, the likes of which we'll never see again

we'd do well to remember that, smackhead or not

Of course, apologies.

two things.....

one, I'm not your pal.
and two, spare me your sanctimonious claptrap.

Hard to feel sorry for PSH, tbh...Addiction is a bitch and if someone of his resources didn't take advantage of all the help that is out there at his disposal, difficult to feel empathy for destructive behaviour...I imagine it's a complicated story behind it all but substance abuse in general has an all too familiar ending

Dated a rich girl for a short period of time who battled heroin abuse, it's the kind of descent that requires significant intervention to treat...and even then, addicts have a way of giving in/up that dramatically affects everyone around them...It's indulgent if nothing else but there are success stories too...Shame he wasn't one of them

Damned right im not your pal, and its not sanctimonius its a valid opinion formed upon actual fact. You're the one being sanctimonius with you're 'its not their fault its physiological' drivel.

Addicts know the substances are addictive hence its their f***ing fault. Simple really PAL.

Leave it out lads eh?

Or start an "addiction" thread or something. You both have strong opinions, but having a row in this thread isnt really appropriate.

IMO.
