Daniel Taylor from The Guardian just tweeted:

"Couldn't squeeze it in but Phil Neville also good on Duncan Ferguson. Says, injury-free, he was 'up there with Shearer, RVN, Yorke, Cole etc' #EFC"

I was too young to admire Big Dunc. I knew he was a hard man and gave his 100% for the club…but was he really that good?

Don't fall for the pre-match propaganda.

Moyes was at it earlier.

Just trying to butter us up before the game.

He was unstoppable when on top of his game, but injuries didn't allow him to perform as the consistently. To be honest his goal scoring record wasn't even close to the others mentioned either.

but was he really that good?

Looking at his first-period stats I'm surprised they're that good: 42 league goals in 107 games. I don't remember him being that prolific. That's Tony Cottee levels of goalscoring.

Looking again, it also says 126 league games, 37 league goals, which is more the ratio I remember.

Seems his Wikipedia page has a few errors.

He was very good for us in that first period either way you look at it. And still good in his second period. As others have said he had days where he dominated the opposition centre-halves like no other.

But the likes of Cole, Shearer and Ruud are on another level of pure striking quality. Their goal records speak for themselves (scoring 3 or 4 times more goals than Big Dunc did).

^ this i believe, dunc is a legend,and he'd **** the manks on his day,buy a duncan ferguson dvd,and u will see how good he was..COYB!

Dunc was really great, underrated by fans of other clubs because of the hard man reputation. Had a great left foot on him when he got the chance to use it. Could've been much more than he was but for the injuries.

That said, he wasn't as good as any of the strikers listed there by Neville. Nice of him to say it though, like.

Yes unplayable.

Don't think what Duncan brought to our game could be just judged on goals. His attitude and appreciation for Everton at a time when we were crap took us back 10 years when we were smashing teams all over England week in week out.

For that reason, in my eyes the man is pure class....

Absolutely mate, stats really don't tell the full story here!

Ferguson played a lot of games when he really shouldn't have, had trapped nerves or something in the base of his spine and Everton couldn't find the problem for ages. Pretty sure I remember an article with Baz Rathbone saying it was high on a miracle how he played in some games as the pain would have been immense. 80% fit he was ****ing immense in my opinion. Power, great in the air, quality left peg, great on the deck and such a presence that struck a lot if fear into centre backs. Gave us something to shout about during some really ****ty times. His first goal against the ****e will live long in the memory as we were in dire straits and I actually thought he was having a ****e game up to them. Once that ball hit the back of the net another Blue was born there and then. To have the likes of Sheedy and the big man coaching you day in day out will only be a good thing for our young lads.

Dunc is a bona fide Everton legend.

Up there with Ball, Labone, Young and the other true legends.

I <3 him
