Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor says it might be necessary to introduce netting around pitches to protect players.
Taylor was speaking after Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand was hit by an object as his side celebrated a winner against Manchester City on Sunday.
"I think you've got to consider, as has been suggested, some netting in vulnerable areas," said Taylor.

"It could be behind the goals and round the corner flags."
Centre-back Ferdinand suffered a cut above his left eye after being struck as United celebrated striker Robin van Persie's winning goal in a 3-2 victory against their rivals.
While Ferdinand played down the incident in a tweet, the Football Association has opened an investigation into the incident, which has been condemned by Manchester City.
City keeper Joe Hart also had to stop a fan, who had run on to the pitch, from reaching Ferdinand as the defender recovered from the blow.
In a similar incident in October, Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was attacked by a fan who ran on to the pitch during his side's match against Leeds United at Hillsborough.
Kirkland, 31, required treatment after he was struck in the face during the Yorkshire derby, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
However, the chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation, Malcolm Clarke, believes introducing netting would not be the right solution.
"Netting is not something we feel is necessary to have," he said.
"No-one condones the throwing of missiles, but arrests last season were 24% down on previous seasons and not many social phenomenon alter that much.
"It is undoubtedly improving and before we start making knee-jerk reactions to particular incidents we ought to bear that in mind."

kind of agree tbh, they've wiped out the passion by booking players for over celebrating which pisses me off so much. jelavic tried is hardest for not going into the crowd and still got booked ffs. therefore, as they've wiped this out they may as well put netting up to stop the silly bookings and fans throwing objects. However, will miss boss scenes like AFC wimbledon's goal last weekend, big shame

I don't agree with netting to be honest, bigger bans and fines should be in place then people would think twice.

Easier solution - any incident of coin throwing results in the next home game being played without fans.

It'd cost the club a lot of money and the fans wouldn't do it as they couldn't go the game.

Simples.

you get morons who aren't real fans though i.e. that one at leeds who hit kirkland. can you imagine if a club as poor financially as us got restricted financially because of a kopite buying a ticket just to pelt missiles

Nets wouldn't do anything to solve the issue i.e. people thinking it's acceptable to throw missiles at players.

Life bans for anyone caught & Police prosecution is the way to go here.

I remember Blues giving it "it's no big deal" after Carroll was pelted with plastic bottles etc after he scored at the St End last season - it's that kind of attitude that needs to change. It's 100% not acceptable.

Tbf I think we are the worst especially in the derby. Not the one just gone but last season's home derby after the Rodwell red was ridiculous. Hilarious viewing as Bellamy tried to take the corner (sorry) but still, you have to look at it and say our 'ultra's' can be a bit naughty.

I'm afraid it's just mob mentality, it's not hard, don't be a kn*bhead by throwing things at people.

agreed. the last thing i would do would be to throw money away - stupid idea, lose lose situation no matter what. I mean it's not a serious problem i don't believe, it's only really in derbies and games between the higher up clubs where stuff like this happens. They should just have improved CCV imo, cameras everywhere to make sure that one "fan" gets just punishment. PFA have many stupid laws enforced though, i mean what the **** the yellow for taking a shirt off rule is about i will never know

I'd hate to watch the match behind a big net, it would have to be small holes to stop any coins getting through, if you had some rain and then some frost, you'd not see the pitch.

If one gets thrown, the FA should use common sense and the punishment shouldn't be as large.

However, City fans were lashing things down on players all game. In that instance, they should be fined heavily and forced to play indoors.

Yes, we're one of the worst for it & it's shameful.

It has no place at the match & anyone who thinks it has should stay away imo.

Nets are a stupid idea. Even fan in the ground anywhere near the pitch can be identified on security cameras. Just deal with the idiots properly....
