Why do keepers dive??? (and this is not a pop at Robles, as all keepers do this).

Lets face it, how many penalties are placed straight down the middle?? Keepers wouldn't have to move. Have many are struck just a meter or two (and quite a few of these with little power behind them) of the keeper??? They would easily get at least a hand to them.

If a keeper became know for waiting until the player struck the ball, all the pressure would be on the player to hit a perfect penalty every time, increasing the potential for them to miss-hit, otherwise the keeper either saves it, or it goes wide. That's my theory anyway.

Thoughts?????

Thing is, most penalties dont go down the middle. If they stay down the middle then they look ridiculous if it goes in the corner every time.

Watch the PKs again... how many times did an Everton player shoot to the bottom corner, and West Ham for that matter. My guess is at least 80% were to either side.

I remember someone saying that the best tip for a goalkeeper in a penalty shoot out is for them to stand their ground and keep big. Most footballers look for the keeper to move first so if the keeper stays still they hesitate.

I agree though, they should rely on their reflexes rather than guessing.

Only the very best players hit the corners. Even if the player doesn't hit it down the middle in a penalty shootout with players are aren't specialists they're normally still saveable or miss so it's best to just wait.

Good game by Joel but awful at the penalties.

Can we stop talking about that bloody penalty shoot out. The taker is expected to score and they do the majority of the time. The keeper is not expected to save it, he takes a gamble and more often than not it doesn't work.

If our keeper just stood there waiting for one to come down the middle to him it wouldn't take long for the takers to realise they just need to place it either side of him.

Hang on, unless i miss something here if a keeper didnt dive would they just run left and right to try and stop it?

A very bizarre thing to suggest, may as well make the keeper run from the other goal then before they take the kick just to give the taker even more of a chance.

There's a skill to taking penalties and good players can often make a GK dive a certain way with the way they address the ball and the way they appear to be striking it. So when a keeper dives and the ball goes down the middle it often isn't just luck.

Keeper should flob onto the floor with body outstretched covering the central section of the goal line. Many pens go down the middle, or roughly somewhere between the centre of the goal and the post. Only the best get them in the corners, and as the OP says, they will occasionally get them wrong and hit the post/send it wide.

Effectively lie along the goalline and you can block many low central shots, and force the taker into raising the ball, increasing the potential for skying it.

Youve been playing too much FIFA. What bugs me is the position the keepers stand in for every direct free kick. How many free kicks clear the wall and fly into the empty corner of the net because the keeper is hugging the other post. Stand in the middle FFS. Not complaining the other night tho as we benefited from it against west ham

The keeper stands on one side as the wall is supposed to defend the other side. Keeper standing in the middle means he's just going to be too far from all corner shots.

keepers should not stand centrally, if they stand say one metre from a particular post the striker is almost guaranteed to shoot for the side with more space, negating the necessity for a keeper to decide which way to dive and thus saving on average 68% more penalties than they do currently,

I know

I've done studies

I Know the theory behind it. I just completely disagree. Stand in the middle and IF the striker of the ball pinpoints it in a corner then they have a better chance of getting to it. Standing on the other post they have no chance
