for some reason i think pele gets remembered as simply a goalscorer

by all accounts he was a fantastic all round footballer. the type to shoot from his own half. a real magician.
meh, shooting from one's own half is not the mark of a magician, its the mark of a speculative hit-and-hope punter. Bravo to those players who manage to pull them off, but I don't rate that type of goal meself.

Pele's hook over the shoulder and volley in the 58 final, now you're talking.

i don't think there were many who even had the audacity to attempt it back then though, hence why it gets remembered and uploaded to youtube even though it never even went in!

You are of course welcome to said opinion. Just think you could make a case for Neymar, Ibrahimovic, Suarez and their ilk being better than him and doing it against better defenders as well.

Different game now. 60s & 70s defenders took no prisoners and the Refs didn't give much protection.
Should have played in Europe to really have put the gloss on his career but when you mention football to people not interested in the game, most will name Pele if no one else .... AND that is the mark of a genius

The Brazilian great Pelé is looking forward to enjoying the Rio 2016 Olympics after being discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

The 74-year-old three-times World Cup winner spent 16 days at the Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo after being diagnosed with an infection that stemmed from an operation to remove kidney stones but, having left semi-intensive care over the weekend, he is now feeling “recovered”.
