72nd anniversary today.

Respect to all of the vets (with us or not) for what they had to go through during that day, and the following four years.

RIP to those who lost their lives, but the idiots in the Japanese government who approved it - against the advice of almost everyone who would have been expected to lead it - probably inadvertently saved the world from the darkness of fascism, militant nationalism and nazism.

"a date which will live in infamy." Never forget.

All honor to those who gave their last full measure of devotion on that terrible day. I've known several Pearl Harbor survivors - I live and grew up in a Navy town. We stand on the shoulders of giants, both here and in Liverpool. We've been very lucky to live in these times, not those.

RIP to those who perished.

What was the name of the ship that survived unscathed (think it was the only one)? I think it was nicknamed 'Lucky' in the US Navy. I know it was sold to the Argentine navy and sunk in the Falklands war under it's new name 'General Belgrano'.

That was the USS Phoenix. IIRC, it was a light cruiser. Yes, then sold to Argentina where she met her end to the only torpedo ever fired by a nuclear powered submarine in anger (obv, shootex and test shots don't count).
