Two outstanding players. I think I know who wins.

Pick your best....

That's a 'Daddy or chips' question and no mistake. I can't decide. Both would make my 'best team of all time'. Legends, both for their skills but also how they played the game. Loyal to their clubs, gentlemen on and off the pitch. They're how I like my footballers to be.

Two of the best of all time, but I always prefer a more elegant defender. So Maldinis calmness, and trophy haul, wins out over Zanettis frenetic all-action type of play.

Although Zanetti, I´d like to add, managed to add a level of class and respect to a club that for many of his years there was a laughing stock of changing squads, buckets of wasted money and failed purchases and basically winning nothing. I like to think he actually made a hard to like club likeable.

Indeed. I kind of adopted Inter as my Italian team after Italia 90 as they had Matthaus in their squad, but for as long as I can remember growing up they signed some of the best attackers in the world, and then wasted them with awful, dull tactics. Zanetti was the one bright spot in those days, with his buccaneering runs. To think, at the time, he was signed along with Roberto Carlos, and Inter managed to not use him properly either, with Roy Hodgson wanting him to play as a winger!

I think they had three coaches the season Zanetti signed, which kind of summed up Inter from that era.

As a bit of trivia though, one of Zanetti's rivals for a full back birth when he signed was one Alessandro Pistone. Hard to see how Zanetti made it into the team to be honest.

The list of honours Maldini won during his career is quite insane.

7 Serie A
5 Champions League (plus 3 runners up)

plus runner up in both the World Cup and Euros with Italy. Bit mad that he never won the Ballon D'Or

Maldini would pretty much make anyone's all time greatest 11, Zanetti wouldn't. Dont get me wrong I love Zanetti but Maldini was different class

Am I right in saying Cannavaro is the only defender to ever win Ballon D'Or/whatever was the equivalent at the time?

Zanetti, whilst undeniably being a top quality player is not a patch on Maldini.

Finest left back ever. No contest.

and such a handsome devil too.

Me too! They were the original dumb multi-millionaire club really. They had some great players and won nowt.

Some of my favourites were Djorkaeff and Zamorano! Zanetti was just a level above for a club that rarely sustained consistent excellence from a player.

Still got my Zanetti top bought at the stadium, although I still haven´t seen a game at San Siro. Maybe the first will be as an away fan with the mighty toffees.

One of the few things I like about Jose, is that he got Zanetti the success he deserved.
