I expected there to be a thread about this, but I couldn't find one.

Thoughts on the match predicting Octopus? Anyone believe it? Personally, I think it has to do with the color schemes of the flags. Paul has predicted Germany every time except against Serbia, Croatia, and Spain. My theory is that Paul's favorite color layout is red white and blue horizontal stripes, and his second favorite is red and orange horizontal stripes. Thats why, when Germany played Serbia and Croatia, Paul preferred their flag. When Germany played Spain however, both had a color layout he liked, so it was a random pick, which is why he picked Germany incorrectly last time, and Spain correctly this time. (This could also be explained if his favorite color was Red, his second favorite was Blue, and his third favorite was Orange)

None of the other teams Germany has had to play in either tournament (Poland, Austria, Portugal, Turkey, Australia, Ghana, England, Argentina [maybe he only likes dark blue]) have any of the color schemes that i speculate he prefers, which would explain why he didn't pick them, and it just so happened to coincide with football results.

Any other theories or thoughts?

its not the colour scheme of teams, its the flags. The way they let him pick is by presenting him boxes of food draped in the flag of the two teams playing, and the one he goes for first is his choice. How is it absurd that an animal is drawn to certain color patterns over others.

well i'm at work right now, so no, no i don't.

and i'm just a skeptic, so when I hear about supposed supernatural phenomenons, i think pretty critically about them, and if i think an explanation seems reasonable, i'll do the research to back it up. i'm sure you've spent on your time on things that I would find equally trivial. The colors of the flags are the only things that differentiate the two boxes are the colors of the flags, so it was the first thing that popped into my head, it didn't take very long for me to "dream it up."

He only has a 3.175% chance of predicting 5 50/50 chance events correctly in a row (as he has for this world cup), so i don't think its the result of mere statistical coincidence.
