Paul Merson: Football, Gambling and Me

The stories down here when he was at Pompey were bizarre.
A few players were proper bad for it.
Steve Claridge I used to see everyday in the bookies spending proper money.
Won a bit as well mind.
I’ve have my own issues with it I must say as, but I now have limits set.
Some good advice from certain posters on here helps as too.

used to be a bad gambling culture at Pompey as I'm sure you know mate. Heard a few stories about Merson and I was aware about Claridge although I gather as you said he is fairly clued up and knows his stuff with it, I know there were a few others as well. I'm guessing it probably started with Redknapp as he is a big gambler and owns horses and whatnot.

I do feel sorry for him as he clearly has problems, but he should not be working for sky. Especially when the scumbags were using him in their ads for skybet.

I don't mind Merson to be honest I have a soft spot for all the Arsenal 89 team.
Addiction in any form is a killer at least he has the opportunity to earn more money the ordinary fella with the same problem would lose there job there family and can quite easily end up homeless .
I lost a younger brother through drug addiction and saw first hand the damage it can do.

It was sad hearing him on the radio a few weeks ago saying at times it's gotten so bad he's actually wished to break his fingers just to stop him using betting apps.

That said I can't help but feel he's used his addiction problems to get sympathy for himself at times. There's that famous story of when he was at Portsmouth under Redknapp, he went in to Harry's office to ask if he could go spend a week up with Sporting Chance because he was spiraling. Because it was a cup week and they didn't have a game Redknapp let him go, only to get a phone call a few days later from a friend who owned a bar out in Tenerife. Told him he'd just served Merson and his missus drinks and now they were sat on the beach sunbathing. What a horrible lie to tell someone all because you want an impromptu holiday.

Wish him well but my sympathy is limited.
